Thoughts on Andrew Cuomo, Part II
It's about over. The decade long nightmare is two weeks from being done.
Governor Andrew Cuomo announced his resignation today, and while I wasn't intending on spending this evening working on my blog, here I am collecting my thoughts on the matter. I'm still in disbelief. I thought he was going to fight it out until expulsion from office. Even the early part of what ended up being his resignation speech made it sound like he was going to fight it out. As we know not that was not the case, and I'm glad that his conscience finally got to him.
But that does not excuse whatsoever the violations that he made. All of the women that he harassed have had their personal and professional lives in some ways ruined. No one should ever have to endure that sort of pain.
As for today: Former Governor George Pataki says that today is a sad day for New York. Yes, it might be a sad day, but the days ahead look so much brighter. The sad day is worth the beautiful evening and tomorrow.
Now I do have questions: what kind of governor will Kathy Hochul be? From what I've been hearing I'm encouraged. I'm also cautious as I was optimistic about Cuomo and instead was left deeply disappointed. I haven't really liked Cuomo in years. From his micromanaging attitude, cliquishness, his views on transit (probably a closet fan of Robert Moses) and his dealings with leaders in the Adirondacks to tear out a tourist railroad, loathing Cuomo has been easy. New York State is facing a litany of make-or-break moments, especially in Western NY. The Buffalo Bills need a new stadium and Central Terminal now has a redevelopment proposal. Neither project can be done without some sort of public money.
Here's my final question: who will be the next Lieutenant Governor? Precedent says that the Governor can appoint anyone, but as a symbolic gesture put it up to the vote of the Legislature.
